What do home interior designers do?

A home interior designer shapes how your home feels and functions every day. The work goes well beyond choosing colours and furniture: it covers how rooms connect, where light falls, how storage is built in, and how every finish will be made and installed. Interior design is about enhancing how you live, not just how your home looks.

Our residential interior design services include:

  • Space planning and layout optimisation
  • Living room and family room design
  • Kitchen interior design and cabinetry planning
  • Bedroom and wardrobe design
  • Bathroom interior design
  • Lighting design and layering
  • Finish and material selection
  • Custom furniture and joinery design
  • Interior fit-out coordination

Interior designer, interior decorator or interior architect?

An interior decorator styles a finished space with furnishings, colour and accessories. An interior designer also plans layout, lighting, finishes and joinery and produces drawings a contractor can build from. Interior architecture goes further, reworking walls, openings, services and structure. Because Aalis Studios is an architecture practice, we can take a project across all three levels.

Residential interior design services we offer

Living room interior design

We design living spaces that balance comfort and flow, conversation and circulation, natural lighting and entertainment integration, so the room works for family evenings and for hosting.

Kitchen interior design

The kitchen is the most used space in a home. We plan functional layouts, optimised cabinetry, an efficient work triangle, durable countertop materials, and proper ventilation and lighting.

Bedroom interior design

Bedrooms must promote comfort and rest. We design master bedrooms with integrated wardrobes, children's bedrooms, guest rooms and home office and bedroom hybrids.

Apartment interior design

Urban apartments need intelligent space planning. We optimise compact layouts, built-in storage, lighting for limited window access and multi-functional furniture.

Bathroom interior design

We plan layouts, wet and dry zones, fittings, tiling and lighting for bathrooms that are easy to clean and built to last in daily use.

Luxury home interior design

For clients who want premium finishes and bespoke detailing, we emphasise custom joinery, high-end materials, architectural lighting, layered textures and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions.

Building the house as well? Our architectural design services and interior design are coordinated in one studio, so the interior is planned with the building, not added afterwards. Room-by-room scope for houses is on the residential interior design page.

How much do home interior designers cost in Kenya?

Home interior design cost in Kenya depends on the size of the project, the scope of work, whether you want design only or a full fit-out, and the materials and furniture you select. At Aalis Studios you begin with a Project Exploration Session, then receive a written proposal matched to your scope and scale. The session fee is credited against design fees if you book within 90 days.

What drives the costWhy it matters
Project sizeMore floor area and more rooms mean more design time, drawings and site coordination.
Scope of workA single kitchen is a different brief from a full-home interior with custom joinery in every room.
Design only vs full fit-outDesign-only covers concept, drawings and specifications. Fit-out coordination adds procurement, supervision and snagging.
Material and furniture selectionsImported stone, bespoke joinery and architectural lighting cost more than standard finishes and off-the-shelf pieces.
Site conditions and timelineRenovations, occupied homes and tight handover dates affect sequencing and supervision.

Designers usually price in one of three ways: a fixed fee for a defined scope, a percentage of fit-out value, or a rate per square metre. Ask which model applies and what each stage includes before you commit. Our fees exclude VAT.

Our residential interior design process

Most residential projects take 4 to 8 weeks for the design phase, depending on scope. A structured process keeps every decision clear from concept to completion.

  1. Initial consultation and lifestyle assessment. We learn how you live, your budget, your timeline and the style you respond to.
  2. Space planning and concept development. We test layouts and circulation, then set the design direction.
  3. 3D interior visualisation. You see the proposed rooms before anything is built.
  4. Material and finish selection. We choose finishes, fittings and furniture for look, durability and local availability.
  5. Detailed drawings and specifications. Contractors and joiners get the information they need to build accurately and price fairly.
  6. Fit-out coordination and supervision. We coordinate trades on site so the finished home matches the design.

Designing interiors for Kenyan homes and climate

A good Kenyan interior responds to where the house stands. We select materials and plan layouts with climate in mind.

  • Nairobi and the highlands: maximise natural light and cross ventilation, use durable flooring, and plan warm lighting for cool evenings.
  • Coastal homes such as Mombasa: specify moisture-resistant joinery, corrosion-resistant fittings and breathable finishes to cope with humidity and salt air.
  • Apartments: use built-in storage, multi-functional furniture and layered lighting to make compact plans feel generous, especially where window access is limited.
  • Every home: plan electrical, lighting and plumbing points with the layout so nothing has to be cut into finished walls later.

Interior design for diaspora homeowners

Many Kenyan homeowners live abroad. You can design, approve and follow the build of your home interior from anywhere. We provide:

  • Virtual consultations at times that suit your time zone
  • Digital presentations and 3D walkthroughs
  • Transparent documentation of scope, selections and decisions
  • Site coordination and progress reporting

If you are building or renovating from abroad, read our guide to building a home in Kenya from abroad.

How to choose an interior designer in Kenya

Use these checks to compare studios fairly, whichever firm you choose:

  • Look at finished projects similar to your home, not only renders.
  • Ask for the scope in writing: what is included at each stage and what is not.
  • Ask who produces the drawings and who supervises the site.
  • Ask how budget and timeline are controlled, and what happens if selections change.
  • Check fit-out capability, or how the designer works with your contractor.
  • Meet before you commit. A short exploration call shows whether you and the designer work well together.

Frequently asked questions about home interior design in Kenya

What does a home interior designer do in Kenya?

A home interior designer plans how your home works and feels: space layout, lighting, finishes, materials, built-in joinery and furniture. At Aalis Studios this covers space planning, living room, kitchen, bedroom, wardrobe and bathroom design, lighting layers, material selection, detailed drawings and coordination of the fit-out on site.

How much do home interior designers cost in Kenya?

Cost depends on project size, scope, whether you want design only or full fit-out, and the finishes and furniture you choose. Aalis Studios starts with a Project Exploration Session: a free 10-minute fit call, KES 20,000 for 1 hour or KES 35,000 for 2 hours. We then issue a written proposal based on your scope. The session fee is credited against design fees if you book within 90 days. Fees exclude VAT.

How are interior design fees structured?

Interior design fees are usually set in one of three ways: a fixed fee for a defined scope, a percentage of the fit-out value, or a rate per square metre. The right model depends on whether you want design only or design plus fit-out coordination. Ask any designer which model applies and what each stage includes before you sign.

How long does home interior design take?

Most residential projects take 4 to 8 weeks for the design phase, depending on scope. This covers the lifestyle brief, space planning, concept, 3D visualisation, material selection and detailed drawings. Fit-out is a separate phase, and its length depends on the scale of the works and the lead time of joinery and finishes.

What is the difference between an interior designer, an interior decorator and interior architecture?

An interior decorator selects furnishings, colours and accessories. An interior designer also plans the layout, lighting, finishes and joinery, and produces drawings a contractor can build from. Interior architecture goes further and may involve changing walls, openings, services and structure. Aalis Studios works across all three because it is an architecture practice as well as an interior design studio.

Do you design single rooms or full homes?

Both. We handle full-home interiors and individual space upgrades such as a kitchen, a living room, a master bedroom with wardrobes or a bathroom.

Can you work with my contractor?

Yes. We coordinate with your contractor so the design is built accurately, and we can also coordinate the full interior fit-out ourselves if you prefer a single point of responsibility.

Do you supply furniture?

We assist with sourcing, specification and coordination of furniture and custom joinery, so what is ordered matches the design, the dimensions and the budget.

Do you work outside Nairobi?

Yes. We design homes across Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and the rest of Kenya, for both local and diaspora homeowners.

Can I hire an interior designer in Kenya while living abroad?

Yes. We run virtual consultations, share digital presentations and 3D walkthroughs, keep transparent documentation and report on site progress, so you can approve decisions and follow the build remotely from anywhere.

When should I hire an interior designer if I am building a new house?

Hire the interior designer at the architectural design stage, before the structure is built. Early involvement lets window positions, ceiling heights, electrical and lighting layouts, plumbing points and built-in storage be planned correctly, which avoids costly changes during construction.

How do I choose an interior designer in Kenya?

Review completed projects that match your type of home, ask for a clear written scope and process, confirm who handles drawings and site supervision, ask how the budget and timeline are managed, and check whether the studio can coordinate the fit-out. A short exploration meeting is a low-risk way to judge fit before committing.

Which materials suit Kenyan homes?

Choose finishes for your climate. In Nairobi's highland climate, prioritise good natural light, ventilation and durable flooring. In coastal homes, humidity and salt air call for moisture-resistant joinery, corrosion-resistant fittings and breathable finishes. We select materials with local availability, maintenance and long-term durability in mind.

Can AI design my home interior?

AI tools can generate quick mood images and layout ideas, which are useful for early inspiration. They do not produce measured drawings, joinery details, lighting plans or specifications that a contractor can build from, and they do not coordinate the works on site. A professional designer turns an idea into a buildable, costed interior.

Does Aalis Studios offer design and build?

Yes. Aalis Studios is a multidisciplinary practice covering architecture, interior design, quantity surveying, project management and construction, so a project can move from design to delivery under one team.
