Why BORAQS Registration Is the Single Most Important Thing to Check
Before Hiring Any Architect in Kenya

Under the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Act, Cap. 525, only architects registered with BORAQS (Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors) may lawfully practice architecture in Kenya. More practically: only BORAQS-stamped drawings are accepted for county building permit applications across all 47 counties. If you commission plans from an unregistered draughtsperson — however well-drawn — your permit application will be rejected.

The consequences of building without approved plans can be severe: the county has the authority to issue a stop-work order, and in cases where construction contravenes zoning or setback rules, a demolition order. In Kenya, this happens. It happens to people who thought they were getting a deal by using cheap, unregistered plan services.
